“Coupling” Seasons 1-4
“Coupling” (2000-2004)

Even though it seems as though there’s an overwhelming majority of my friends who are married now, here’s an interesting little experiment to help those of us who are still dating as to whether or not the person you’re seeing is faking it - and by “it”, I mean “smiling”. The BBC has an online psychology test that step you through 20 quick movies and ask you to judge whether the smile is genuine or fake.
While I did fairly decently (14 out of 20), the summary at the end gives additional pointers on how to spot the insincere. (Via)
Steve Hackett keeps the tempest spinning in my proverbial teacup: The former Genesis guitarist confirms that the band’s management has been in touch with him to talk about his interests in a reunion. (Hat tip to Dan)
While I don’t think that everything will remain the same - of course, things will eventually evolve - methinks this Motley Fool article about the rather arrogantly-named start-up “Pioneers of the Inevitable” turning Apple & the iTunes Music Store into another Compaq or SGI is just a tad ridiculous.
Namely, while the author recalls the history of Compaq, SGI and Informix as supporting his argument of Apple’s eventual change from a successful company into thoroughly beat-down follower, he ignores counter-examples like, say… oh, Microsoft? One might even add Red Hat as another. Just because Apple has a solid, overwhelmingly-popular, industry-dominating product offering for the first time since the Apple II line doesn’t automatically mean that they’ll ultimately fail. Frankly, I don’t really understand this anti-Apple schadenfreude exhibited by analysts and the press - especially given the infinite amount of free passes Microsoft gets (despite the relative dearth of actual innovation that comes out of Redmond). God forbid that they should learn from their lessons of failure in the past and make an overwhelming rebound…
I wish I had thought of this prank (and had the guts to pull it off) when driving the ‘Pike was a semi-regular experience for me.
Yup, that’s right… it’s clementine season! Time to break out the Triple Sec and Tequila! (Thanks again Tim!)
Woo hoo! Darlin’ Clementines, here I come!
What the heck is “anti-viral bilge”? From what (little) I know of sailing and medicine, I can certainly imagine what it’s supposed to be, but I can’t say I have every heard of such a thing (nor do I suppose I want to know what it is).
Oh wait - It’s the subject of a spam I got earlier today.
Can someone explain to me what they think these degenerate lowlifes are going to accomplish by sending nonsensical emails?
I’m sure you’ve read by now about the whole kerfluffle Dubya’s power-base is giving him over the “Christmas”-less holiday card. In reading about it in the Chronicle, I came across a rather surprising - or maybe not so much - quote from one of these people upset with such “insensitivity” that managed to disgust me even more (despite my belief that it wasn’t possible):
[William Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights] was not mollified by a letter from Lands’ End [regarding his group’s boycott of their “Christmas”-less advertising] saying it “adopted the ‘holiday’ terminology as a way to comply with one of the basic freedoms granted to all Americans: freedom of religion.”
“Ninety-six percent of Americans celebrate Christmas,” Donohue said. “Spare me the diversity lecture.”
Got that, all you Americans who don’t celebrate Christmas? You don’t matter.
So here’s an interesting little pair of bugs related to Microsoft’s PowerPoint - both the Mac and Windows versions. At work I had to make a presentation with a crapload of graphs showing the results from a customer survey they ran. I originally wanted to play around with Keynote and export it to PowerPoint, but I ran into a bunch of problems there (which I just happened to resolve today with thanks to the Keynote Yahoo! Group mailing list and not to Apple’s own support forums).
Looks like it’s making the rounds in the usual places, but here’s a pretty scary read on the dangers of not doing your homework before buying online.
OS X user lookin’ for love on the internets? Match.com has got a Tiger widget to make things a little more convenient.
Want to support gay-friendly companies when shopping this holiday season? The Human Rights Campaign has produced a handy-dandy little guide to help you in your shopping bonanza.
Curious since 1974. Chronicling it here since 2004.
Thanks for the update. I continue to hold out hope — although, as I posted on my own blog recently — I hope this doesn’t take on a “least common denominator” approach and lower Steve’s genius and Peter’s artistic insight to Phil’s level of schmalz …

Thanks for dropping by David! I’d have to say from reading your exceptionally clever post, we’re pretty much on the same page (although I think I might allow a little more for Phil’s earlier solo stuff).
There’s always a concern for mass commercial-selloutitude when these sorts of things happen (Didn’t Eagles fans need to take out another mortgage for the “Hell Froze Over” tour?), I’m pretty optimistic that any fruits of a reunion wouldn’t stoop to Phil’s descent into formulaic (yet large-income-generating) pop. After all, there are ego’s aplenty among this group - including Steve and Peter, and those two have been particularly good at keeping to an artistic standard. My inability to really be able (or desire) to listen to the vast majority of Phil’s solo stuff does not take away my appreciation of his talents as a drummer. I think that if we see (rather, hear) anything from this potential reunion, it’ll be all good.
While their remake of “Carpet Crawlers” a while back shows that they have the ability to work together again, my biggest doubt is whether they be able to do it for an entire album (never mind the potential roadblocks they might have in doing such a thing). Of course, if they tour - I’ll be beside myself (I get a little impatient with Peter’s tour-once-a-decade philosophy).

Agreed — if they tour, I’ll be all over it! Thanks for stopping by and checking out the article; I hope that you continue to enjoy my “clever” posts (I appreciate the compliment).
