Dangit!

OK, found the first (major) problem: the archives can’t be found. I’ll look into it and let you know when I’ve beaten it into submission.

Update 1/26/05 @ 11:30am: OK, it looks like the commenting problem Sean found was related to the archives problem… I accidentally deleted the .htaccess file when rolling everything over. It’s fixed now. And in the meantime, it seems as though one PHP issue that I was hitting my head against has resolved itself, with another (slightly less important, really) popping up. Ah, web design whack-a-mole…

  4. Hi. I’m presently using Earthlink to host my website on a Windows (ugh) server with Blogger (double-ugh) as the mechanism for posting. I have already pulled Wordpress, MySQL, Apache, and so on to my local PC and successfully folded my entire web log into that. I can post to my own machine just fine now! I’d like to move forward with the conversion to Wordpress and need to decide how to accomplish that.

What I need is a hosting service that I can use for Wordpress while keeping my existing domain names of publicdomainprogress.info and publicdomainprogress.org. Do you have advice on this? By the way, I love the new look. Much better than all the wordpress styles I’ve played with. Good job. Clean, stylish, Zennish. Good work!

  5. Welcome back Michael! Hope your blogging sabbatical went well!

As for service providers, I can’t recommend my own highly enough: Server Logistics. Even though they’re pretty inexpensive, they offer a lot for the money and have fast, friendly service. Nice & fast connections on Apple XServes running OS X Server (so it’ll be heckuva lot more secure than any Windows installation) through their facilities in LA. In fact, when I was having some troubles getting WP to install initially, they helped me through what I got hung up on. Really cool, especially considering that WP isn’t something they have to support!

Lemme know if you need any more help! (And thanks for the compliments!)

  6. Interesting. I thought the choices were Windows IIS or Unix Apache, with very little else available. I know nothing about Apple servers, but if I can copy my stuff back and forth between the server and my PC (I always like having a local copy for insurance, access, and so on) then I really don’t care about the platform. Wordpress support is the kicker: I looked aroundand tried several solutions in my home network before settling on Wordpress, hands-down, no contest.

I’ll check Server Logistics out. Thanks!

  7. Yup, you shouldn’t have a problem backing up your blog if you’re already running WP on your home PC, since we’re talking just platform-agnostic PHP files with an also-platform-agnostic MySQL backend. You’ll be really happy with SL. If you do decide to go with them, tell Aaron I said “hi”. :-)

  8. Sounds cool, thanks!

By the way, I ass-u-me you’ve heard MySQL’s warning on security. While it is a bummer that the problem exists, it is heartening to see them come right out and make sure everyone is warned about it. Responsiblity in action.

  9. One should note that the MySQL security notice only pertains to Windows installations - the worm exploits poor Windows security (is there any other kind?), not any bug in MySQL. This website, as it’s running on OS X Server, is not susceptible.
